  Metro bomb attacks heighten worldwide alert

After the blasts in Moscow, survivors spoke of the thick suffocating smoke and a surge by the crowds to escape up the escalators. This could have caused more loss of life than the blasts themselves. In the aftermath of the attack in Moscow, mass transit systems around the world have heightened security and have reviewed emergency procedures.

"It is not possible to have a 100% secure system or install security screening for underground systems similar to those used at airports for example," said Mysore Nagaraja, Co-founder and President of infrastructure development and management firm Spartan Solutions in the USA, and formerly the President of Capital Construction for the MTA (Metropolitan Transportation Authority) in New York, in charge of delivering $20 billion in capital works and managing a $1.1 billion security improvement investment for the New York Subway following the attacks on the city of 9/11 2001.

Nagaraja was involved in more than $40bn worth of investment on New York’s subway where his projects included the $8bn scheme to connect the Long Island railroad into Grand Central Station. He is currently troubleshooting on the city’s $10bn water and waste water programme. “Dealing with political interference can be really difficult. Once you establish the budget everyone expects you hold to that budget and schedule.”

Honorees were nominated by their peers and judged on criteria that included job commitment, industry involvement and contribution, achievement in his or her position and innovation in his or her field.

Sherry Little was selected for the Top 40 Under 40 list

Sherry Little served for eight years as a senior professional staff member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, she oversaw the implementation of TEA-21. And, as the chairman’s primary advisor on public transportation, she authored the Senate’s version of SAFETEA-LU.

During the Bush Administration, Little served as the deputy administrator, then acting administrator of the Federal Transit Administration from February 2007 until January 2009. Little led a staff of more than 500 in Washington, D.C., and 10 regional offices around the United States and managed a budget of approximately $10 billion.
